Hi Graeme, Love the Blog!
Re the Honey bee swarm - I dont know much about bees, but believe that sometimes as the number of bees in a hive multiply, a second queen may hatch and the new queen will take half the worker bees and go in search of a new hive. If the queen had crash landed on the grass the swarm would follow her.
At the church in the hampshire village of Chawton last week there was a huge swarm trying to follow their queen into a tiny hole in the stonework.
Hope this helps, I will be looking at every cow-pat twice now!
